SEO Mistakes That You Should Avoid At All Costs

by Jen Linnuste 19. January 2011 09:19

So you got your website up and running and you think you have done a pretty good job optimizing it, however you forgot some of the most basic elements and have made quite a few SEO boo boos. At this point you only have two options; fix it yourself and risk not having it done right or hire a search engine optimization specialist to do it right the first time. Now not all SEO companies follow these guidelines and they can make mistakes to, so I have given you some of the basic things to avoid.

Below are a few SEO mistakes that you and/or your SEO company needs to avoid at all costs.

Having Your Entire Site or Even Your Navigation Built All in Flash

If you have made this mistake you need to reverse it NOW and put your site into HTML. If you want the search engines to be able to view your site properly then your content should be in HTML not a flash image. Content is king in SEO and it is what will drive the search engines to push you up in the rankings for your particular keywords. Having a flash navigation can irritate your users and since they are the ones buying your products or services you want to make your site as easy to use as possible.

Choosing the Wrong Keywords

Have you done all the necessary keyword research before you optimized your site for them? If not then you could be wasting a lot of time and money optimizing for keywords that for one have no search volume and two do not or will not convert. If no one is searching for that keyword then it makes no difference it you are in position 1 or 100 as no one is looking for that anyway. No matter what anyone says if you do not convert sales from your keywords then get rid of them they are of no value since you make no money with them.

Interal Linking Gone Wrong

Whenever you’re linking to a page on your own site, whether it’s from a blog post, your home page or a service page, make sure you have optimized your anchor text. If you have not then you have given that link no value and have basically just wasted your time.

External Linking to Link Farms

A link farm is any group of web sites that all link to every other site in the group. Although some link farms can be created by hand, most are created through automated programs and services and will be considered SPAM. According to Google, a site that participates in a link farm may have its search rankings penalized as they think you are "spamming" the search engines.

Bad URLs

Bad URLs can hold you back form ranking properly in the search engines for your particular keywords. Having a properly optimized URL that includes your keyword in it will have much more value that one with just letters and numbers. You want to make sure you tell the search engines in every possible way exactly what you want your page to rank for.

Improper or No Title Tags

Every page on your website should be have a unique Title Tag. It should describe the content on that page and be engaging enough to entice a user to click on your listing. After all this is what they will see when they stumble across your site in the search engines and if they do not like what they see or it is not relevant to their search you are likely to miss out on that sale.

AND FINALLY THE WORST OF ALL.......

Black or Gray Hat SEO

When it comes to ethics and Organic Search Engine Optimization, you’ve got three different routes you can go. You can follow the rules laid out by the search engines (”White Hat SEO”), you can try to deceive the engines to get better rankings (”Black Hat SEO”), or you can creatively interpret the guidelines to stretch their intended meaning (”Gray Hat SEO”). If the goals of your SEO strategy are long term then avoid ALL Gray and Black Hat SEO techniques. If you don’t, and a search engine catches you, it won’t hesitate to peanilize, leaving you with a website that is worthless. These penalties are assessed without warning and can last for life.

So now that I have given you quite a bit to think about and probably quite a bit of work to redo your best bet would be to hire an SEO company that is reputable and that will take care of your site with the utmost respect for the search engines as well as your users.

Google's "Sponsored Links" Being Replaced by Google "Ads"

by Jen Linnuste 9. November 2010 08:09

It seems that Google's Sponsored Links are now being called Google Ads. At this time the roll out is only affecting English language domains and it is unclear when it will move to other languages.

Here is how they looked before:

How they appear now:

This will not alter the way the ads are displayed or selected but it is quite interesting as to why they made the change since the term "Sponsored Links" has been used for so long now.

The addition of Google Places and various local ads may be a contributing factor to the demise of the “Sponsored Links” term. Another reason may be that Google found that the term “Ads” performed better.

Bing named their ads “Sponsored Sites” and Yahoo “Sponsored Results” so perhaps Google is trying to set themselves apart from the pack once again by this renaming of "Sponsored Links" to "Ads".

Things to Avoid When Choosing an SEO Provider

by Jen Linnuste 4. November 2010 07:22

So you think choosing an Organic Search Engine Optimization provider is easy, well think again. SEO is complicated and it involves hundreds of variables and it is constantly changing. Proper SEO requires experience, patience, and the fine art of knowing how to make the search engines like your site, all while following the search engines' webmaster guidelines.

It is pretty easy for a good SEO provider to spot the others companies that are just looking to make a quick buck at your expense, but for a typical business owner, all SEO providers often seem to be the same. So you need to look closely at what you are really getting from them in your SEO package.

Below are some of the things you want to beware of when you:

Watch Out For Guaranteed Ranking

SEO providers do not own the search engines; therefore they can never guarantee a particular spot within the search engines. However they should be able to give you an estimate on how long it will take to see results for your particular keywords

Thirty Days Or Less

Not if it is organic rankings you are looking for. If anyone is telling you they can rank your website in 30 days or less, they should be eliminated as a potential provider. If they are providing you with on-page optimization as well as off-page then this feat is impossible if they are using "white hat" SEO techniques

Keywords are Not on Target

If you find your keywords are not hitting your target goals then it is probably because your SEO provider picked bad keyword/ phrases that sound good, but has little or no traffic. They do this because they are not competitive and easy to rank. A good SEO company will always show you all the information you need so that you may make an informed decision for your keywords

Cheap Prices

If an SEO company has unbelievable low prices then you are probably not getting much but a few on-page tweaks, this is by no means real SEO.

Unethical or "black hat" SEO techniques that are used by some SEO companies have left a bad taste in people’s mouths. Many claim the entire industry is all a scam. I can't blame them given how hard it is to find a good SEO company that will do exactly what they say they are going to do. The reality is that people get scammed everyday and bad SEO companies give false promises of quick ranking, unrealistic guarantees, bad keywords and very cheap pricing. So it is worth you taking your time to make sure that you have the right provider working on your businesses’ website.

Google's Place Search Now More Efficent For Local Search

by Jen Linnuste 1. November 2010 04:16

Google recently announced a new kind of search result called Place Search. These results can be accessed from the new "Places" option in the left panel on Google search results pages, but unlike many of the other search options available in the panel, Google will actually return you these results for queries automatically, when it thinks you are looking for local information.

Place Search results are marked with red pins, much like you're used to seeing on Google Maps.

Tthis is great news for local businesses that are optimized for local search (see below for one of our client examples). For those who aren't, this would appear to symbolize a crucial time to starting placing more focus on this area of local search engine optimization

"We've made results like this possible by developing technology to better understand places," explains Product Manager Jackie Bavaro. "With Place Search, we're dynamically connecting hundreds of millions of websites with more than 50 million real-world locations. We automatically identify when sites are talking about physical places and cluster links even when they don't provide addresses and use different names ('stubb's bbq' is the same as 'stubbs bar-b-que')."

"One of the great things about our approach is that it makes it easier to find a comprehensive view of each place," adds Bavaro. "In our new layout you’ll find many more relevant links on a single results page—often 30 or 40. Instead of doing eight or 10 searches, often you'll get to the sites you're looking for with just one search. In our testing Place Search saves people an average of two seconds on searches for local information."

This feature is just in the roll out phase now, but to make sure you are found there contact us today and we will handle all the necessary aspect of your organic search engine optimization.

How Local SEO Can Help Your Business

by Jen Linnuste 22. October 2010 03:40

Local Search Engine Optimization has been becoming increasingly more important for local business owners. If you own a local business and want to get more targeted traffic in the local listings, then Local SEO is the way to go.Local SEO is just like standard SEO, where relevant and compelling content is crucial. The next thing that is very important is making sure that proper local keyword research is done. Not all keywords have the search volume necessary for optimization.

Below are the benefits to local search engine optimization:

  • Higher search-engine rankings: Competition will be less for the local keyword phrases which means you will see your ranking move up faster
  • Higher conversion rates: Using the local keyword phrase your visitors are looking for, the website traffic you get is much more targeted
  • Make more money: Your earnings potential is higher when you use local search engine traffic because people who come to you are more serious about your product, service or information.

Google, Yahoo, & Bing have also gotten serious about localized search, Google Places & Google Maps are examples of how local search is helping drive traffic to local businesses. Address, location and driving directions are important for local search so you need to identify your business correctly. Business identity needs to be established online. It anchors the customer experience with your business. If your identity is not established online, your business does not exist.

Consumers are also expanding the type of sources they use to find local information and local businesses.

Users are more likely to do business with a company that they find by using local search terms. Local business search on social sites will continue to grow and can’t be ignored either.

So if your business need a boost in traffic and sales then contact Crystone.net today and let us help guide you through the Local Organic Search Engine Optimization experience.

Scary SEO Tricks to Beware of this Halloween

by Jen Linnuste 20. October 2010 09:30

Halloween is the time of year when people dress up as ghosts, ghouls, goblins and other hideous creatures of the night that roam the streets in search of candy and a good scare. In the SEO world, horrors hide behind every corner, pitfalls can cause your site to fall in the rankings or drop from the SERPs altogether.  Halloween may only last one night but a penalty or ban from a search engine can affect you forever. Here some SEO problems an Organic Search Engine Optimization company can help you prevent this Halloween:

Hidden Text:

Hiding text from the visitor is done in many different ways. Common techniques include creating text colored to blend with the background, CSS  “Z” positioning that places text “behind” an image — and therefore out of view of the visitor — and CSS absolute positioning that positions text far from the page center.

Broken Links/404 Errors:

When a broken link is found by a search engine spider it equates to a dead end. If the page returns a 404 error, the search engine will identify the page as non-existent as well as all teh pages that link to it. If the page linking to the 404 error remains on this list for too long or has too many links to 404 errors, it can have negative effect on the “Quality Score” of that page.

Cloaking:

Cloaking is a "black hat" SEO technique in which the content shown to the search engine spiders is different from what is seen by the user’s browser.  The purpose of cloaking is to deceive search engines so they display a page when it would not otherwise be displayed.

Frequent Server Downtime:

When a website is offline the impact that it has on your SEO can be bigger than you think. If Google accesses your website while your website is down, Google could classify your site as being untrustworthy. The more often your site is offline, the more Google will think your site is not to be trusted, thus Google will position you lower in the listings.

Link Farms:

A link farm is any group of web sites that all link to every other site in the group. Although some link farms can be created by hand, most are created through automated programs and services. A link farm is a form of spamming the index of a search engine. According to Google, a site that participates in a link farm may have its search rankings penalized.

Keyword Stuffing:

Keyword stuffing is considered to be an unethical search engine optimization technique. Keyword stuffing occurs when a web page is loaded with keywords in the meta tags or the content. The repetition of words in meta tags may explain why many search engines no longer use these tags. Keyword stuffing had been used in the past to obtain maximum search engine ranking and visibility for particular phrases. This method is completely outdated and adds no value to rankings today.

Optimizing for Too Many Keywords:

Keyword dilution is a very common SEO mistake. Each page of a website should target 1-3 keyword phrases max, and even less if the keyword phrases are extremely competitive. Targeting too many keywords on a page detracts from the overall topical relevance and reduces the importance of your most important keywords.

So to stay safe from all the ghoulish SEO mistakes that are awaiting you, besure you hire an Organic Search Engine Optimization  specialist, like www.Crystone.net and let us help guide you through all the pitfalls that may lay ahead.

The Highest Price Ever Paid for a Domain

by Jen Linnuste 2. September 2010 04:15

Säpptes news reported that they got a new record with regard to its highest sum ever paid for a domain name . It is about insurance.com as reported, it has been sold for the entire $ 35.6 million dollars. The buyer is a lead generation company QuinStreet . This is just a domain sale and not a purchase of existing business, QuinStreet confirmed by a statement saying that they simply were not interested in the current activities undertaken on the site .

Many domain investors also argue that insurance.com would be more sought after than, for example sex.com , which we previously told you about is for sale . The reason is simply that the porn industry is in decline while the insurance market is strong and it is clearly so that by insurance.com relatively easy to move a first place at the term at Google, and thus generate leads much that they can then sell to insurance companies .

Pay for Social Media?

by Jen Linnuste 6. August 2010 04:19

USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism has published a study where they analyzed the impact that the web is for Americans and among the nearly 200 study subjects who are taking up so one of them is the issue of Internet users would pay for social media .

Most do not want to pay . For example, the study found that 49 % of those surveyed have used the free micro blogs Facebook and Twitter but zero percent said they were willing to pay to use them .

The question was , " Would you pay to use Twitter if it took a charge ? " .

" With such an extreme conclusion , that 0 % would be willing to pay for these services , underlines the difficulty of getting Internet users to pay for something they already get for free " says Jeffrey I. Cole, Director of Center for Digital Future at the school .

" Twitter has no plans to charge its users , but this result shows , beyond doubt , the enormous problem of converting ' free ' users to paying users , "says Cole . " Online providers face significant challenges in order to get customers to pay for services they now receive for free. "

This is obviously an obstacle especially newspaper publishers hope to overcome . Last week , were reported the News Corp 's The Times visits fell to one third of what the number was before they started charging their readers .

" Internet users can access content in three ways : they can steal it , or pay for it , or accept advertising on Web pages they read , "says Cole . "users express strong negative opinions about online advertising , but they still prefer to see ads as an alternative to paying for content . Consumers want free content without advertising , but in the end they still understand that the content must be paid for - in one way or another .

Is Your Website Design Hindering Your SEO?

by Jen Linnuste 25. May 2010 05:37

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has been widely used for some time now, however there are still many website designs that hinder the search engines from properly ranking them. Granted you can expect a certain lack of SEO knowledge from uninformed users and designers who are new to site building, however there are still quite a few cases where many companies fail to recognize the importance of an SEO friendly Web design.

Here are some of the issues that can cause the search engines to not rank your site properly:

  • Lack of content on the homepage

  • Lengthly site load time due to excessive flash or "heavy backends"

  • No hierarchy. For very large sites, the lack of a clear hierarchy presents a problem

  • Same Title on Every Page

  • Lack of updating the site with fresh information

  • Non-SEO friendly Content Management System (CMS)

  • Flash Entry Pages or Splash Pages

  • Framesets and Framed Pages

There is a lot more to search engine optimization than just good web design, but investing in a professional design can ultimately improve the opportunity to  engage the user and build your reputation online. Now you are one step closer to improving your company’s overall online presence, which in itself is an important contributing factor to search engine optimization.

Crystone Upgrades Spam Filtering

by Jen Linnuste 20. April 2010 04:25

After the problems we have experienced with our current spam filtering provider we have  decided to start looking for a new third-party provider for our e-mail filtering. Today, over 175,000 mailboxes have spam filtering and we will now replace our mail server which handles approximately 2.4 million e-mails every day. More than 98% of those messages are spam messages that must be filtered out before they end up in customers' mailboxes.

There are a few different players in the market today that are capable of the demands we put on a new supplier, and after a thorough evaluation, we have chosen Swedish Halon as our new partner. Today they deliver spam filtering solutions for large Swedish web hosting companies and other companies and we are confident that with the new solution will solve the problems we've had in past years.

We expect to have the filtering in operation within two months, a separate page for spam filtering will also be posted on crystone.se for those of you who wish to read more about it.

A little More About Crystone's New Data Center

by Jen Linnuste 30. March 2010 07:06

We thought it would be good to give you a bit more information about our new data center that we previously announced the initiated relocation of our servers to. This post will probably be quite "technical" but we think it is important to give as much details as possible so we can show the steps we have taken to secure our operating environment.

The datacenter has fully redundant systems for power and cooling and has a sophisticated exterior protection and firefighting systems by halo producer gas. We now have two different and completely physically separated data centers located in Liljeholmen and Hammarby Sjöstad, Stockholm, allowing for purely geographical redundancy. The datacenter in Liljeholmen will also receive an upgraded substations during the summer of 2010.

In our new datacenter our customers servers are put in 47U server racks. The new center is also built to handle the most frequent external risks in the operation of servers, systems and applications. The facility minimizes the risks that is related to burglary, fire, power (ex. power outages, lightning and voltage fluctuations), water damage and sabotage.

Crystone Hammarby has fully redundant power supply through ..

.. two completely separated power supply systems, if your company's servers comes with dual Power supply, this means that your server is still working even if one of our power supplies for any reason suffer a poweroutage. The facility is fully redundant with separate A-and B-force. Either one comes with enough power to supply the entire datacenter. You can also rent a component that connects your server to A and-B supply even though there's only one power supply in the acctual server. In this datacenter, we also have a high voltage ring with its own substation, which provides feeds from two different directions into the facility.

During normal operation, power is delivered from different directions into separate substations. Electric power then goes through a separate UPS systems, which together deliver the power on to power breakdowns in the data center. Would we, for any reason have a power failure at our high-voltage loop it's backed this up by redundant batteries connected to our UPS:es. Our reserve power is supplied from two large redundant diesel generators from Volvo Penta.

The UPS and diesel generator feeds are on separate systems and are not interdependent. If there is a power failure the energy will come from the UPS batteries instead. The diesel generators are powered up to later take over the electricity supply from the UPS and batteries. And when we regain our high-voltage power supply, the two feeds, eg. Emergency and primary electronic metering, are phased out. And once we are sure that the supply of high voltage power really works the operation is returned to normal.

Load balancing (GLBP)

Companies who wish to distribute traffic among multiple servers can use our load balancing service, GLBP (Gateway Load Balancing Protocol). This means that we connect two routers to your servers that balances the load. Router A and Router B also has a master/slave- relationship, meaning as long as the master is active, the slave remains as the backup and would identify problems with the slave master, it will shortly take over the operation and thereby minimizing downtime. We also offer a variety of backup solutions delivered on a SAN from EMC.

Pscars.com signs with Crystone

by Jen Linnuste 25. March 2010 04:28

Here is a highlight of one of our newest clients, www.pscars.com.

“This a very unique site in the way it will be handling the car buying and researching process. This site is built not only for the consumers but it gives dealers a distinct advantage as well on the type and quality of the leads they will receive.

Consumer Side:

PScars.com is completely free to our consumers at all times.  When they come to the site, here is a brief list of what they can do or will be able to do.

·         Create a Member profile

·         Create a car profile

·         Create a finance profile

These profiles throughout the process are completed as they follow the process in Building, Researching and Comparing cars within our Configurator.  PScars.com is the first site to take the prominent feeds of 3rd party services, and make all the information available in an easy, practical system.

As a consumer plays in the configurator and builds their car, the system is gathering all the car details, special packages, finance options etc and then when the consumer is done building the car, they can save it to their “garage” and come back to it when they are ready to do more, or post it to our dealer network.  They remain anonymous to the dealer throughout the negotiation process, can edit and make changes to the car, work with the dealer on up sells and additional packages etc completely anonymously.

Once the consumer is happy with the price and car, they click “confirm” – once they do this is when the dealer is charged for the lead, and is provided with the consumers contact information.

Consumers will have a member’s area, the Pscars community, linked in to all the social media sites so they can post their cars and share with friends. Receive email newsletters and announcements, and be the first to become part of the Practical Systems family of sites.

Dealer Side:

On the dealer side, we have been working with dealers getting their input and feedback on how the back end or psdealers.com side should be developed.  What tools do they need to work with us, how can we make the whole process more “practical” for them as well.

One of the best things about it, is it’s a pay for play system.  Currently dealers get 1000’s of bad leads from lead aggregators and have to weed out the poor quality leads in hopes of finding one or two that work.  With our system, they are notified when a consumer in their area posts a car, all the car details, credit scores, and trade in info, preferences, financing options etc so the lead becomes that much more qualified as all the details are already spelled out.  So it puts the consumer back in the driver’s seat so to speak, provides the dealers with a system that they will know and learn provides only quality leads, and they only pay for leads they work.

There is SO much more to what we will be including as we grow, but first we want to get phase one up and running.

As you also see from the site, there are tons of areas for great advertising opportunities for the OEMs, major brands, independent dealers and affiliates.  When you select a brand, it takes you into a variety of customizable show rooms, with plenty of features for the dealers/brands to display commercials, downloadable PDF brochures of the cars, sale and specials etc.

On the business side, the dealers get other vendors in their arena to join their practical system, and it becomes this b2b directory again hopefully where then they build and invite people into their practical system, so through proper advertising and word of mouth, it just starts building itself and we keep adding more and more features, functionalities and markets as we grow." states Terrence Smalley of Practical Systems, LLC.

"We will be working long and hard to achieve the best results possible for Pscars.com. This will be a great opportunity to let our Organic Search Engine Optimization  efforts shine." states Andreas Linnuste, Managing Director of Crystone USA.

So Crystone would like welcome Pscars.com to our SEO community.

Microsoft and Crystone Partner for a New Future Project

by Jen Linnuste 24. March 2010 10:09

Earlier this March, Crystone and Microsoft launched a new collaboration on Microsoft's new Hyper-V platform for virtualization.

- Virtualization is growing fast and the opportunities are huge, "says Murat Yigit, Operations Manager, Crystone.

- Virtualization is providing opportunities such as full redundancy, ability to upgrade the performance without downtime at a much lower price than the conventional solutions available today on a broad front. We have seen that many small and medium-sized enterprises have a much better understanding of the opportunities surrounding virtualization says, Per Ahlberg, Microsoft.

- What was previously thought to be complicated and too advanced has become much easier today, "continues Per Ahlberg.

- We are very pleased that Microsoft has chosen us for this cooperation, we have a long and successful experience with Microsoft products, continues Murat Yigit. With this collaboration, we hope to build on our already good relationship. In early April, the new services will be aunched, where Crystone will offer Microsoft's entire broad repertoire of products in the virtualization platform, Hyper-V. For this project we have bought into a very powerful hardware, we also invested in our new and ultramodern server hall in Hammarbyhamnen.

- Microsoft's goal has been to find a supplier of Hyper-V in Sweden, which has both the technical maturity and good quality of deployment for our platform, Crystone meets all these requirements, "says a satisfied Sofia Skötte, Microsoft.

Crystone Begins Moving Servers to New Data Center in Sweden

by Jen Linnuste 15. March 2010 04:13

We have signed an agreement for the new server hall in Stockholm following the blackout that occurred on the 11th of March. This weekend was the first move of several planned. The decision to move the hall was already in place following the cooling failure that occurred on August 28, 2009.

"The blackout that hit the server hall in Liljeholmen last Thursday was what sped up our planned relocation. “says Murat Yigit, Head of Operations.

The new server hall, which has just been newly built, has a double and completely separate power supply, redundant networks, and extinguishing systems. Also the cooling corridors between the racks makes the cooling more efficient.

Crystone now has two server halls in Stockholm and a unique position to offer full redundancy through these.

"It is important for us to show all of our customers, that through our actions, we are actively taking charge of any situations." continues Murat Yigit.

Crystone sells Norwegian division

by Andreas 29. January 2010 05:03

We have at the year end of 2009 completed the sale of our Norwegian operation to FS data. The reason for selling is that we want to invest and grow in our other markets, primarily Sweden, USA and Turkey, and we are through this sale gain both capital and other resources to do so in an even greater extent than we do today.

For Crystone AB, Crystone LLC and Hostley customers this means, of course, no change at all. And to our Norwegian customers, there will be no change in existing systems and server structure in the near future, it will be business as usual.
